UT Tyler Courses Compliant with Federal Security Standards
The University of Texas at Tyler announces that courses offered by its Department of Computer Science have been approved by the Committee on National Security Systems (CNSS) as meeting the requirements of the CNSS 4011 and CNSS 4012 security standards. This accreditation confirms compliance with Federal Security Standards through the year 2014. The CNSS 4011 standard consists of the fundamental security knowledge needed by any Information Systems Security (InfoSec) professional. The CNSS 4012 standard consists of the security knowledge needed by a Chief Information Officer (Senior Systems Manager – SSM) in authorizing systems certified as secure by a security manager. As a result of this accreditation, students at the University of Texas at Tyler who complete the security curriculum will be awarded CNSS 4011 and CNSS 4012 certificates. Any UT-Tyler student awarded these certificates will automatically meet federal employment requirements for the CNSS 4011 or CNSS 4012 certification. CNSS is a Federal Government entity under the U.S. Department of Defense that provides procedures and guidance for the protection of national security systems. CNSS accreditation is the required initial step in establishing a Center for Academic Excellence in Information Assurance at UT Tyler.
“Computer security accreditation places the University and our department at the forefront of information assurance education. It’s a win-win proposition…our students will have a decided advantage when seeking employment in government and industry…and University recognition will go a long way in promoting our new research focus in computer security and open some doors to help secure future external grant funding,” said Dr. Stephen Rainwater, interim chair and Chandler professor of computer science.
Dr. Nary Subramanian, assistant professor of computer science, is scheduled to receive the official accreditation award on behalf of the University at the 13th annual Colloquium for Information Systems Security Education in Seattle on June 3rd.
CECS Ambassador Program
The Department of Computer Science encourages your participation in the CECS Ambassador Program. The purpose of this worthy service program is to provide peer-to-peer recruiting of new students for the college. Ambassadors will conduct weekly tours of college facilities with prospective students and their families, greet dignitaries visiting the college, and will telephone prospective students who have expressed interest in the programs of the college. Ambassadors will certainly wish to include such service on their resumes...a real plus when interviewing and applying for employment after graduation. Furthermore, they will be recognized at the annual CECS Honors Banquet.
I hope you'll consider applying to be in the inaugural class of CECS Ambassadors. This is a great opportunity for you to serve your department, college, and university! An application and program description are attached. Completed applications may be submitted to the Office of the Dean - RBS 2002 or via e-mail attachment to CECS Administrative Assistant Holly Landers (Holly_Landers@uttyler.edu).
